Helping Seniors to Age-In-Place Safely
At home, or at home with loved ones!

As we age, the importance of doing so safely takes on a much bigger priority. Both for mature adults and the members of their families who love them, (sometimes known colloquially as “the sandwich generation) helping to ensure our loved one is able to move around their own home (or a family member’s home) safely and securely, provides us with peace of mind. Regardless of a senior’s fitness level or mental acuity – accidents can still happen however and that’s why using medical devices, mobility adaptation equipment and home safety tools just makes good sense when it comes to aging in place. All of us want to feel our homes are our sanctuary, our refuge and the place where we feel most comfortable so considering the use of simple things like a shower bar, a lifeline alert or even a medic alert device are just some of the things we can do to support a senior to safely age in place. If you are in the business of providing safety equipment, medical devices, adaptive technology and/or tools for helping keep seniors safe, you need to consider the advantages of working together with Amintro, an app and an organization specifically serving those aged 50+. Our audience is your target market and covers both seniors and those who love them. That’s why if you believe, as we do, that seniors value and deserve safety and security – along with access to great information sharing opportunities, you need to give Amintro a call.
Tools For Staying Safe At Home
There are so many tools available specifically designed for making the lives of mature adults a little easier that we probably can’t list them all. That’s why we need your input. If you offer a product that’s specifically geared to managing some of the inconveniences of aging we have a dedicated group of followers who are no doubt interested in your products or services. Studies done by the US Centre for Disease Control and the National Council on Aging, point to the unintended impacts of elderly persons who experience a fall. These include long-term health implications, possible permanent brain trauma or death, prolonged healing times and a potential loss of independence. Our dedicated Amintro audience ranges in age from the 50+ “entry-level” senior, who may or may not still be providing care for their own kids, to “senior” seniors enjoying life well into their 90’s. The reality is however, at any age older adults are simply more susceptible to a trip and fall and/or longer-term health consequences as a result. Here are just a few of the things we know:
- In the Bathroom
- Anyone can slip and fall. In fact, bathroom accidents account for upwards of 80% of all accidents that happen in the home and that number isn’t just related to older persons.
- It’s estimated that approximately 35% of those aged 60 and older will experience a fall in the bathroom of the family home.
- Installing simple, fast and effective adaptive devices such as: shower grab rails, non-slip mats or bathtub strips, or using a shower chair and a flexible hand-held showerhead that provides folks with the freedom to shower sitting down are simple tools anyone can use.
- Seniors living at home alone, or seniors moving in with a family member can have these simple retrofits done, often in a matter of hours, ensuring not just their own but everyone’s safety!

- Around The House
- Stairs, area rugs, even to much clutter can lead to anything from a simple stumble to a dangerous trip and fall with serious consequences. A knock on the head or mild concussion for some can turn into a traumatic brain injury for a senior. It might be time to employ the services of a company that specializes in decluttering and downsizing – even if you don’t plan on moving. Less clutter means less to trip over and your adult children may appreciate it too, especially when it does come time to move permanently – whether to their home or to a senior’s residence.
- Consider removing area rugs or installing non-slip, under rug padding or grippers. They come in a variety of sizes to accommodate virtually any size and style of rug in your home.
- For the stairs, consider non-slip treads or specifically designed carpeting that adds additional safety to every step you take.
- Mobility challenges that are more problematic may benefit from the investment in, and installation of, a Stairlift. This will provide seniors the mobility they need to move freely between floors of a home safely. While they are a bigger investment than stair treads, they do come in a wide variety of styles and price points that should help savvy shoppers find a lift within their budget.
- Compared against the cost of long-term compromised health from a fall, a stairlift is a wise investment. Here again is what the USCDC has to say about falls: “among older adults who died from falls in 2010, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC), brain trauma was the cause of death in 41% of cases. But even “less severe” initial injuries such as broken bones may also constitute threats to life when they require potentially complicated medical interventions such as invasive surgery, the potential for infection, and the risks of anaesthesia.”
- Technology as a Safety Tool
- If you’re concerned about an aging parent, we know it’s because you have their best interests at heart. Whether they live with you or alone, taking a night off to dine out with friends might leave you feeling worried or guilty that you’re not accessible in case of an emergency. These days, technology offers a wide range of tools to help address these concerns.
- Something as simple as an “Alexa,” or “Google Home/Google Mini” can be put to good use. Installing one in your home is like having your own personal assistant! Serving a wide variety of purposes, they can even be used to activate security cameras or turn on the outdoor lights. Some, when combined with other technology tools, can even call 911 in case of an emergency.
- If you want your loved one to have something even closer to hand in case of emergency, perhaps a medic alert or lifeline alert device and/or personal alarm system is what you need. Help is available at the push of a button and you’ll be notified too that your loved one requires attention. These devices provide peace of mind for families who wish to travel for example, but who want to know their loved one is safe at home or can get the help they need in an emergency.
If you are in the business of providing safety, security and peace of mind through products that range from adaptive medical devices, to personal alarms to home retrofits and renovations, Amintro IS your audience. Whether you specifically cater to seniors, or to the sandwich generation of mature adults looking for ways to help keep Mom and Dad safe, our platform, app and magazine content is geared to your target market and we’re always looking for partnerships to provide Amintro members with relevant, informative and engaging content. Aging in place, peace of mind and safety, these are just some of the values of 50+ consumers. Ask us how you can tap into our dedicated followers.
